Where We Bake began on Darkinjung/Guringai land, at our community bakery by Copacabana beach.

But this isn’t about us.

When we opened Burnt Honey Bakery on November 16th 2019 we knew that a core part of our business was to be open and clear about our politics, and to use the platform that we were building slowly to voice our positions on things like climate change, waste, sea conservation and, of course, Black Lives Matter. During the 2020 bushfires we made cookies shaped like Koalas to raise Money for bush regeneration and they were incredibly well received. So when January 26th rolled around we decided to do the same, instead using the image of the Aboriginal flag, we raised money for The Healing Foundation and loudly voiced out position against the date, refraining from selling the classic fare - lamingtons and the like - on the day. Our community was incredibly receptive.

When Black Lives Matter made headlines again in March 2021 we responded by bringing back the Aboriginal Flag cookies permanently, and they now sit in prime position in our display case for every customer to see when they enter the bakery. We have since raised approximately $3000 for National Justice Project and over $2000 for Deadly Connections, that’s $1000 a month going to organisations that are making a difference to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. $1000 a month that would not otherwise be helping to support communitites still to this day living with the consequences of our presence on this land while we continue to benefit.

It costs us so little. We hope that you will consider doing the same.

We decided to build this web site late in 2021. It’s taken us some time, those of you who own bakeries will understand the limited time that a baker and bakery owner has available outside of shaping sourdough and baking croissants, but it was always going to be a challenge. The Aboriginal flag cookies truly are the heart of Where We Bake which is why they feature in our brilliant logo, designed by Gumada.

We understand that running a bakery is exhausting, time consuming and expensive, but these cookies are inexpensive and easy to make. We also hope that becoming involved in this way will encourage you to dig deeper, learn more and do more, if you can.

If you have any feedback, suggestions, questions, or resources that you would like to recommend please get in touch, the best way is via email to info@wherewebake.com.au.

Thanks for getting involved,
